The B.S.M.S. (Bachelor of Siddha Medicine and Surgery) is an undergraduate degree program in the Indian traditional system of Siddha medicine, one of the oldest medical systems rooted in South Indian heritage. The course spans 5.5 years, which includes 4.5 years of academic study and 1 year of compulsory internship. It is offered by institutions recognized by the National Commission for Indian System of Medicine (NCISM) and aims to produce Siddha practitioners well-versed in classical texts, diagnosis, herbal pharmacology, and traditional therapeutic techniques such as Varmam, Kayakalpam, and Panchakarma. The medium of instruction is typically Tamil or English, depending on the institution, and students also gain foundational knowledge of modern medical sciences including anatomy, physiology, pathology, and pharmacology.
Upon completion of the B.S.M.S. degree, graduates are awarded the title of Siddha Doctor, allowing them to register and practice under State or Central Siddha Medical Councils. The course prepares them for careers in clinical practice, teaching, research, drug manufacturing, or public health services. With the growing global interest in alternative medicine and Ayurveda-based systems, B.S.M.S. graduates also find opportunities in wellness centers, integrated hospitals, and global research in traditional medicine. The course not only imparts healing knowledge but also encourages a holistic view of health that balances body, mind, and spirit using natural methods passed down through centuries.
